Behind the Scenes at Abstra(kt), Part One: Interview with Katie
What’s your vision for Abstra(kt) Studio?
My vision was to create an environment that supports and promotes artistic expression. I’ve loved the Dallas art community for many years and, I’m continually inspired by stylists here and across the country that are passionate about bringing beauty into the lives of their clients. Marrying art and the beauty industries to me was a natural fit. Having artwork around inspires hair stylists to be more creative and do their best work. I also feel that there is a great opportunity in the north Dallas area to showcase local artists and feel that this is a way to support our local arts community.
Why is Abstra(kt) Studio more than just a hair salon?
Abstra(kt) Studio goes beyond being a hair salon. We’re trying to create an environment that fosters artistic expression and creativity every day. We strive to give our clients an environment where they are excited to come and see what’s new, and where stylists are excited to go to work.
Part of the concept of the space is also for it to be a functioning gallery, so we’ll be offering quarterly art shows and client appreciation events to showcase new artists. We have an artistic director, Mikki Mallow who is one of the most successful local artists in the area. She’ll be responsible for not only showcasing local artists by displaying their work in the salon, but also for creating art-inspired events in our location for our community.
What are you most excited about?
The talented staff is amazing. They share a common vision—constant learning, staying ahead of current trends and being known for going the extra mile for their clients by delivering advanced skillsets that, in my opinion are the best in this market.
What’s been most challenging?
Finding the perfect space that I knew would be convenient for clients but that would be in the middle of the tremendous growth happening in Frisco. I looked for a long time to find the best place to offer this unique experience to our clients.
What sets this business apart for North Texas clients? What will they experience different from other salons in the area?
One of the things I love about north Texas clients is that they have high expectations when it comes to their salon experiences. To meet those expectations we’re approaching things a little differently. I’ve enjoyed working in both Los Angeles and New York City, and we’re bringing a contemporary, edgy feel to this salon that you won’t find anywhere else in this area.
What services will you be offering?
All of our stylists are at the top of their game in providing premier hair services. We will be a full service hair salon offering cuts, color, Balayage, extensions, and Brazilian Blowouts. If there is a hair service you need, we’ve got you covered at Abstra(kt) Studio.
What products will your clients find in Abstra(kt) Studio?
I was trained and educated at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis and I have always loved the company. Intelligent Nutrients was started by the founder of Aveda, Horst Rechelbacher. When he sold Aveda to Estee Lauder he wanted to take everything he learned along the way and start a new product line that was in line with his vision for how we treat our planet. This is something that is really important to me and I’m proud to showcase this product line in the salon. Intelligent Nutrients has a strong presence in the northern part of the country, and I’m excited to bring the product line to Frisco.
In addition to Intelligent Nutrients, we will also be offering some of the best styling products in the market. BLNDN, Reverie and Brazilian Blowout products will also be offered in the salon.
